Findings from EVV’s award records
Extra Virgin Vault records 2350 awards across 588 oils from 13 external competitions. 10 competitions currently have enough matched-release overlap to rank by observed award-tier stringency. Only 14 source pairs have at least 10 same-release comparisons; sources include EVV’s separate internal review scale.
The largest matched sample is Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition and California State Fair EVOO Competition: 34 of 71 comparisons received the same broad award tier. This describes the catalogued sample, not all entrants or competition quality.

Observed award-tier stringency
When the same release received a lower broad medal from one competition than from its matched peers, that competition ranks as more stringent in EVV’s winner archive. Positive scores mean lower observed medals; negative scores mean higher observed medals. Ranks with overlapping intervals are not statistically distinguishable. EVV’s internal review scale is excluded.

Analysis uses Bronze, Silver, and Gold-or-higher only. Higher honours retain their original labels and group as Gold-or-higher for broad tier agreement.
Methodology and assumptions
Identity: Same oil content file and release year. Multiple awards from one source on that release reduce to the strongest effective tier.
Uncertainty: Rates show raw counts. A 95% Wilson interval is generated for samples of at least 10; smaller samples are labelled anecdotal.
Categories: Judging panels, categories, style classes, volume classes, and entrant pools differ. Missing style data is treated as not comparable, not as a mismatch.
Stringency: Mean matched-release gap between peer award tiers and this competition’s award tier. Positive values mean this competition awarded a lower broad tier than its matched peers. A competition is ranked only with at least 10 matched releases and 2 external peers. EVV’s internal review scale is excluded.
Evidence class: Latest approved competition evidence class from the assurance registry; Pending if no approved year is recorded.
Limits: Winner archive, not a record of all competition entrants. These statistics cannot determine selectivity, difficulty, prestige, or a universal award conversion.
