Wairarapa Olive Oil
Wairarapa, on the lower North Island of New Zealand, is a compact, quality driven EVOO region centered around Martinborough and the Ruamahanga Valley. Cool nights, bright summers, and free draining soils suit Mediterranean cultivars such as Frantoio, Leccino, Picual, Koroneiki, Picholine, Barnea, and others, yielding both monovarietals and blends that range from delicate and grassy to robust and peppery, with green herb, artichoke, and citrus notes and a clean finish. Harvest typically peaks in June, and many producers favour early picking and on site milling to lock in freshness. The scene is artisanal and diverse: respected names like Loopline, Juno, Olea Estate, Blue Earth, Lot Eight, Olivo, River Grove, and more sit alongside small family groves. For buyers, Wairarapa offers a broad spectrum of characterful oils across vintages, with generally good availability and occasional seasonal sellouts.
