Gods Hill Wines
God's Hill Wines, established in 1998 by Charlie Scalzi (also known as Carmine) in South Australia's Barossa Valley, is a small-scale family winery rooted in tradition dating back to Roman times in the Campania region of central Italy. Charlie began making wine as a child in Italy with his grandfather and father, learning hands-on techniques and the importance of hygiene in winemaking-a craft he has now brought to Australian soil.
The vineyard, located in Lyndoch approximately 55 minutes from Adelaide CBD, spans 30 acres and grows shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and chardonnay. The property also features olive trees, adding to its Mediterranean character. Charlie's son Felice manages the vineyard, tending the vines with the same respect for tradition that has been passed down through generations.
The family business extends beyond winemaking to include Ennia Cucina restaurant, where Charlie's son Edward serves authentic Italian cuisine-including his signature Tiramisu that has become a highlight for visitors. The family also offers accommodation through Villa Scalzi, embodying the Italian agriturismo tradition.
Charlie focuses on minimal intervention winemaking, using premium grapes to create wines that reflect each vintage's character. Production is limited to 3,500 bottles per variety annually, emphasising quality over quantity. His philosophy combines traditional methods, like sulfur use for preservation, with a commitment to affordability, aiming to offer high-end wines at accessible prices.
God's Hill Wines has earned numerous accolades, including a Silver Medal (94/100) at the 2022 Winestate Shiraz Challenge for their Single Vineyard 3 Generation Shiraz, a Gold Medal at the 2016 WineState World Wine Cabernet Challenge for the 2008 Permanent Arm Cabernet Sauvignon, and a DOUBLE GOLD at the 2014 CWSA (Chinese Wine & Spirit Awards) for the 2008 Menzel Shiraz. Their wines have also received recognition from renowned critics: Robert Parker awarded 96 points to the 2004 Black Olive Merlot, while Phillip White gave 93 points to the 2005 Menzel Shiraz. James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion awarded 92 points to the 2006 Menzel Shiraz.
The winery sells grapes to Dorrien Estate while retaining a portion for its boutique label. Open for tastings, the cellar door operates Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm, with walk-ins welcome until 2pm. The property also features the "Bird's of God's Hill" art and wine series, adding a creative dimension to the visitor experience.
