Baleia Wines & Olive Oil was established in 2009 by the Joubert family on the south coast of South Africa, near St Sebastian Bay. Olive groves were first planted in 2008 on limestone-rich soils shaped by a Mediterranean climate featuring cold winters and windy summers. Farming practices prioritise the area’s unique terroir, including rare Canca fynbos, a plant species adapted to the region’s alkaline limestone outcrops, which coexists with agricultural land. The same mineral-dense limestone soils influencing the olive oil’s character also contribute to the distinct chalky minerality of Baleia’s wines. The property’s focus on sustainable cultivation aligns with its commitment to preserving local biodiversity.
